Loja
After getting up early in the morning I left Quito for Loja, which is a small town with 180.000 inhabitants in the South of Ecuador. The official name of the town is: Ciudad de la Inmaculada Concepción de Loja. It was founded in 1548 by a Spanish general Alonso de Mercadillo and named after his hometown in Granada. I did not have a lot of time in the city, because my flight back was in the afternoon. The objective of my visit was the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL), which is one of the biggest university of the region. The colleagues showed me the laboratories, the campus and the incubation house of the UTPL, which have all high standards and could be easily as well in Europe.
Loja has a lot of famous personalities, one of them is Matilde Hidalgo Navarro. She was the first woman in the history of Ecuador to became medical doctor. Furthermore she was the first woman to vote in whole Latin America, because after receiving her diploma, she announced publicly her decision to execute voting right in the next presidential election, which was specially granted to her by the responsible minister. This of course led the emancipation and to general voting right (with time) in Ecuador and in the whole region. She was the first woman in Ecuador to stand to a public election and she was elected into the city council of Loja. Later she became the President of the Ecuadorian Red Cross. A museum and several memorial is guarding her memory in Loja and in other cities.
